A Pilot Project to Identify Women with Traumatic
Brain Injuries Due to Domestic Violence
Domestic violence is a significant cause of injuries to women, with estimates that up to 35% of womens visits to hospital emergency departments are prompted by abuse-related causes. However, little research has been conducted concerning the specific kinds of injuries abused women receive, and whether brain injuries constitute a significant proportion. Clinical experience suggests that some women experience cumulative effects of multiple, mild brain injuries due to domestic violence. The proposed pilot project was to determine the number of women seeking treatment in the Emergency Department of the Ohio State University Medical Center who are identified as involved in an abusive relationship and have experienced mild brain injuries. Women seen by emergency room social workers for assessment at the time of emergency visit because of suspected or reported domestic violence were asked brief screening questions to determine the frequency of blows to the head, altered consciousness due to trauma, and temporary or permanent consequences. It was our expectation that women who are victims of domestic violence may be at risk of cumulative damage due to multiple, mild brain injuries. |
