Substance Abuse and Brain Injuries

Staff of the Ohio Valley Center (OVC) have spent a decade developing programs, conducting research and providing training on the issues of substance abuse and TBI. We believe this is a critical issue in outcomes and the success of rehabilitation efforts (Corrigan, 1996; Bogner, Corrigan, Spafford & Lamb-Hart, 1997). OVC has promulgated models for secondary prevention of substance abuse for use in TBI rehabilitation programs (Corrigan, Bogner & Lamb-Hart , 1995) and community-based treatment of substance abuse disorders among persons who have experienced TBI (Corrigan, Lamb-Hart & Rust, 1995). OVC has also developed a number of materials for prevention and treatment of substance abuse for use by primary and secondary consumers (User's Manual and HIV/AIDS and TBI), facility based rehabilitation professionals (Programmer's Guide) and community based professionals (Utilities for Community Professionals).

Center staff are deeply committed to the dissemination of information regarding the issue of substance abuse following TBI not only through the distribution of written materials but through workshops and other training opportunities. Staff have made presentations throughout the United States and Canada. Center staff have also made presentations in Australia and Russia on the topic.

Research

The Ohio Valley Center has conducted several studies about the impact of substance abuse on rehabilitation of persons with brain injury during the past two decades. These can be reviewed in our Outcomes section. A review of our current research activities can be found on the page describing our CSAT Project.

Miscellaneous Articles about Substance Abuse and TBI
In addition to our Substance Abuse Education Series, Center Staff have written other articles that have appeared in newsletters and other non-peer reviewed publications. For the most part, these articles have been written for persons with brain injuries and their family members.

"Did I Mention the Teeth" was an article written for I.E. magazine that addressed prevention messages about the use of substances after a brain injury.

"Lessons from Little Red Riding Hood" was an article written for state BIA newsletters that addressed the issue of silence about use the alcohol and other drugs after a brain injury.

"What do we do with a Drunken Sailor" was another article written for state BIA newsletters that addressed the issue of alcohol and other drugs after brain injury and how to intervene.

"Relationship Between Traumatic Brain Injury and Substance Abuse" was a brief recap of the literature on traumatic brain injury and substance abuse.
