Substance Abuse

We have spent a decade developing programs, conducting research and providing training on the issues of substance abuse and TBI. We believe this is a critical issue in outcomes and the success of rehabilitation efforts (Corrigan, 1996; Bogner, Corrigan, Spafford & Lamb-Hart, 1997). The Ohio Valley Center has promulgated models for secondary prevention of substance abuse for use in TBI rehabilitation programs (Corrigan, Bogner & Lamb-Hart , 1995;) and community-based treatment of substance abuse disorders among persons who have experienced TBI (Corrigan, Lamb-Hart & Rust, 1995; link to TBI Network).

The work of the Ohio Regional TBI Model System has built on past work on this topic. We have extended our examination to include the role of violence versus substance abuse as mediating factors in outcomes, screening for substance abuse among persons with TBI on rehabilitation units and early versus late treatment . Our clinical work operating a community-based program for substance abuse treatment for persons with TBI was the impetus for the project on domestic violence and TBI.

For additional information on materials we have developed around this topic go to our substance abuse section.
